Sinti und Roma galten in der NS-Zeit als \u201eminderwertig\u201c. Die systematische Vernichtung von hunderttausenden Menschen aus der Minderheit gipfelte in der Deportation in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau. Von den rund 22.600 dorthin verschleppten Sinti und Roma starben mehr als 19.000. Im Mai 1944 beschloss die KZ- Lagerleitung, die \u00fcbrigen Sinti und Roma zu ermorden. Diese leisteten erbitterten Widerstand, worauf die SS den ersten R\u00e4umungsversuch abbrach. Aber in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. August ermordete die SS die restlichen H\u00e4ftlinge dann doch.
