Statement on the occasion of the European Holocaust Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma 2020, issued in collaboration with CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin<\/strong><\/p>

On Aug.2, we mark Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, 76 years since the liquidation of the so-called \u201cZigeunerlager,\u201d the Roma and Sinti camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau. We\u00a0remember the hundreds of thousands of Roma, Sinti and Travelers subject to genocide by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. Between 1935 and 1945 an estimated 220,000 \u2013 1.5 million Roma were persecuted, encamped and ultimately murdered, following classification as \u201cenemies of the race-based state\u201d within the\u00a0Nuremberg\u00a0Laws.\u00a0<\/p>

Our Jewish values teach us the importance of\u00a0solidarity; our history informs our understanding of the necessary place remembrance holds in a community\u2019s self-definition in the present.\u00a0Thus, this day of mourning and commemoration is a reminder of the permanent need for vigilance\u00a0in preserving the dignity and fundamental rights of all people. It is a shared responsibility \u2013 Europe was rebuilt on the ashes of the Holocaust and we must ensure it remains part of our\u00a0global\u00a0collective memory as a lasting lesson about hatred left unchecked.<\/p>

As we mourn the\u00a0memory\u00a0of those killed, we also pay tribute to survivors, who bore witness and served as living testimony for us all, nearly eight decades on. Among them, we pay tribute to\u00a0Raymond\u00a0G\u00fbreme, French Roma Holocaust survivor, who passed away in May. A symbol of Romani resistance, he leaves behind a\u00a0young generation\u00a0empowered by his story of resilience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
