Katarina Taikon has been compared to Martin \u00a0Luther King. She was born in a tent, and came to change the course of \u00a0Swedish history. The story about the young girl who was denied \u00a0education, learned to read in her late twenties, and later became one of \u00a0the most read authors of children\u2019s books in Sweden, is also an account \u00a0of the emergence of the modern Swedish welfare society \u2013 and the one \u00a0group left behind: the Roma minority.<\/p>\n

\u201dI don\u2019t know how people will react to my book, all I know is that it\u2019s the \u00a0beginning of a long struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

With those words Katarina Taikon stepped into the limelight. The year \u00a0was 1963 and her first book, Gypsy Woman, had just been \u00a0published. This was also the start of her lifelong struggle for human \u00a0rights for the Roma in Sweden, aiming to provide access to education, \u00a0long denied, and the closure of the tent and caravan camps where \u00a0Swedish citizens of Roma background were forced to live.<\/p>\n

Katarina Taikon\u2019s struggle in the 1960\u2019s was hugely successful, but she \u00a0also became the target of vicious attacks from politicians as well as \u00a0\u201dordinary people\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the 1970\u2019s Katarina Taikon started writing the autobiographical \u00a0series of children\u2019s books about the young Roma girl, Katitzi. The \u00a0sequence became a huge success and was the most read children\u2019s \u00a0books in Sweden second only to Astrid Lindgren\u2019s international \u00a0successes Pippi Longstocking. A whole generation of children in Sweden \u00a0grew up reading the books about Katitzi.<\/p>\n

The documentary paints a dramatic and vivid portrait of one of the most \u00a0important advocates of human rights in 20th century Europe, set \u00a0against the backdrop of the developing Swedish welfare state.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gellert Tamas is a documentary film maker, author and journalist. Books\u00a0 like \u201dThe Laserman\u201d and \u201dDe apatiska\u201d has been translated to more than 10\u00a0 other languages and has been awarded, celebrated and debated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His documentary film \u201dThe Laserman\u201d was awarded with the swedish prize\u00a0 Kristallen in 2005 and recevied an honarary mention at Prix Europa. That\u00a0 year he also produced the documentary film \u201dAnother Day\u201d, about the\u00a0 tsunami in Thailand. Tamas\u2019 latest documentary is \u201d Imprisoned \u2013 The\u00a0 Untold Story of Dawit Isaak\u201d (2011, with Maria Magnusson)<\/p>\n
