Film evening „Es ging Tag und Nacht, liebes Kind (It went day and night, dear child)”
Roter Salon Rom e.V. Cologne (DE), 2 August 2020, 18:00 CET
In commemoration of the night from August 2 to 3 1944, during which the last Rom_nja and Sinti_ze still imprisoned in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp were murdered in the gas chambers, we are showing the documentary “Es ging Tag und Nacht, liebes Kind” (It went day and night, dear child) by Melanie Spitta and Katrin Seybold (1981) on August 2, 2020 at 6 p.m. in the Roter Salon Rom e.V. Köln. We are also pleased to announce that the daughter of Melanie Spitta, Carmen Spitta, has sent a greeting.
Melanie Spitta, daughter of a Sintiza who survived the genocide of Rom_nja and Sinti_ze, worked as a filmmaker and civil rights activist to bring to light the Nazi genocide crimes against Sinti_ze and Rom_nja, which had been denied by society for decades. In her films, she lets Rom_nja and Sinti_ze themselves have their say, documents the National Socialist crimes as well as the racist continuities after 1945 and the survivors’ experiences connected with them. Thus Melanie Spitta made an extraordinary contribution to the fight for a recognition of the genocide and an equal participation of the minority.
In the documentary „Es ging Tag und Nacht, liebes Kind (It went day and night, dear child)” she accompanied survivors and their children to Auschwitz: “This is not a film about Auschwitz, but a film with people who had to suffer Auschwitz.”
The event is organized by Rom e.V. Köln.
